The EPA published the Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Cadmium (includes supporting documentation) in A more recent chapter on cadmium was published in as part of Sorensen's book on metal poisoning in fish. Environment Canada has prepared a priority .   EPA has updated its national recommended ambient water quality criteria for cadmium in order to reflect the latest scientific information, and current EPA policies and methods. EPA's water quality criteria for cadmium provides recommendations to states and tribes authorized to establish water quality standards under the Clean Water Act.

On April 4, , the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its updated Recommended Aquatic Life Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Cadmium -- . Water Quality. The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) includes several programs to protect and manage clean water and public health. The water quality program implements portions of the Pennsylvania Clean Streams Law (P.L , Act of , as amended (35 P.S. §§ et seq.)) and the federal Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. § et seq. ()).

Water quality criteria for surface water are established in order to protect aquatic organisms and human health. The aim of water quality criteria is to define conditions under which a healthy aquatic organism community is present and water uses as sources of drinking water for human consumption are possible (Behra et al., ; EPA, ; Fairbrother et al., ).   1. Introduction. Ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for human health represent the specific levels of chemicals in ambient water necessary to protect human health in ambient waters (USEPA, a; Yang et al., ).The aim was to establish or revise water quality standards (WQS), and ultimately provide the basis to control the discharge or release of pollutants (USEPA, b).

The ambient water quality criterion for cadmium is recommended to be identical to the existing water standard which is 10 µg/l.

In adopting water quality standards, states set exposure. of a water quality guideline for cadmium. Table A Summary of data used to determine the relationship between the short-term toxicity of cadmium and ambient water hardness. Table A Summary of data used to determine the relationship between the long-term toxicity of cadmium and ambient water hardness.

The ambient water quality criterion for cadmium is recommended to be identical to the existing water standard which is 10 pg/l. Analysis of the toxic effects data resulted in a calculated level which is protective of human health against the ingestion of con- taminated water and contaminated aquatic organisms.

The calculated. document is EPA’s new recommended ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for the protection of aquatic life based upon consideration of available information relating to effects of cadmium on aquatic organisms, and consideration of independent external peer review and EPA workgroup.

At a water hardness of 50 mg/L CaCO. 3., the recommended long-term (d) average water quality guideline for dissolved cadmium to protect aquatic life is μg/L.

Figure 2 can be used to estimate the long-term (d) average water quality guideline for other hardness values. 61 rows  This table contains the most up to date criteria for aquatic life ambient water quality.

Water quality standards are composed of three parts: Establishing Water Quality Criteria Water quality criteria set ambient levels of individual pollutants or parameters, following example shows the current EPA criteria for cadmium.
